Monday 12th November 2012, 15.54

Looking for your next sewing project? Learn how to make a Liberty print iPad case with our simple step-by-step guide below, perfect to protect your iPad or tablet. Create your own colourful accessory to carry your gadgets  safely, plus if you want to add that personal touch to your gifting this festive season, they make an ideal present for Christmas.

Ready to get started? Follow the instructions below:

You will need:

Dimensions below fit iPad3, but can be altered to fit any size

2 x rectangles of Liberty print fabric cut to 24 x 29 cm (we’ve used Wiltshire Berry tana lawn)

2 x rectangles of plain tana lawn cut to 24 x 29cm

2 x rectangles of  thick wadding cut to 24 x 29cm

1 x 23cm zip (available in our Haberdashery in store)

Scissors (available in our Haberdashery in store)

Tailors chalk (available in our Haberdashery in store)

1 x reel thread (available in our Haberdashery in store)

Pins (available in our Haberdashery in store)

Step 1

Measure and cut out the two pieces of Liberty print fabric, two pieces of plain fabric and and two pieces of wadding. Set the Liberty print fabric and wadding aside.

Step 2

On the plain fabric, draw diagonal lines at 2cm intervals with the tailors chalk and a ruler. Repeat in the other direction so you have a criss-cross diamond pattern.

Step 3

Layer up the fabric ready to quilt. First place one piece of Liberty print fabric the wrong side up, followed by a piece of wadding and then a piece of plain fabric the right side up. Use a few pins to secure.  Do the same with the other three pieces of fabric, so you have two matching rectangles.

Step 4

To create the quilting set your sewing machine on a straight, medium sized stitch then sew along the lines of both sets of the plain fabric.

Step 5

You should now have two pieces of quilted fabric. Take one piece of quilted fabric and place the zip right side down along one of the edges which measures 24cm. Pin in place, so it sits as shown below in the picture. Sew in place and then pin and sew the other side of the zip to the second piece of fabric in the same way as before, so they are joined.

Step 6

Close the zipper 3/4 of the way and fold the quilted pieces together (keeping the Liberty print sides facing each other). Sew around the 3 remaining edges leaving a 0.5cm seam allowance.

Unzip the zipper fully, and turn the case the right way round. Give your case a quick steam iron for a pristine finish.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match your fabrics depending on who you’re making for. Choose fabrics you love and don’t be afraid to experiment with new prints. The steps used above can be used to create lots of different sized cases for phones and laptops, you’ll just need to find the right size zip.
