Guerrillas in our midst
RG: Hi Richard what’s Guerrilla Gardening all about?
RR: Gardening without boundaries, where you see the potential, typically neglected public land. Unfortunately, it’s considered criminal damage regardless of how beautiful it looks.
RG: Where do you think your obsession with flowers comes from?
RR: Growing up in a house with lashings of William Morris fabrics, flower arrangement competitions for the church and a big messy garden in need of labour.
RG: Tell me about your lavender bags and their journey from growing on a roadside kerb to scenting Liberty’s hallowed halls?
RR: Lavender is a great plant for Guerrilla Gardeners: it’s easy to look after, great for the bees, looks good and smells good. We dry the lavender ourselves and then using recycled fabrics from TRAID make them by hand. We are delighted to have had the opportunity to make some especially for Liberty this year.
RG: It’s our season of Flower Power, what does this phrase mean to you…?
RR: Guerrilla Gardening is flower power, challenging apathy, neglect and convention with plants.
