On Saturday we were delighted to welcome Hourglass‘ Artistic Director Gina Brooke to the store. Those of you lucky enough to secure a consultation with the renowned make-up artist were treated to her expert advice and a complimentary make-over.  For the rest of you we thought we’d ask Gina a few questions…

How did you break into the beauty industry?
I’ve always been obsessed with anything beauty-related, but I also loved art and chose to go to art school. While I was at school, my fit model asked me to do her makeup for a photo shoot – the pictures were published in a magazine and I was asked to do another job. I then began to work so many shoots that I dropped out of art school and began working full time in the beauty business…it was the best decision I ever made.

What makes Hourglass stand out?

Which beauty products help you to get through a long day?

Do you have any secrets for long lasting make-up?

What is a hot trend for Fall?

The trick is to wing out the top line first and then connect with the bottom from the corner of the eye. Finish with Film Noir Lash Lacquer by Hourglass. What’s your beauty philosophy?

There are no rules when it comes to make-up: the possibilities are endless.

“BLOOD CONCEPT was born to suggest a different approach towards scent selection. We wanted people to feel personally involved in the scents and to choose them based on a personal affinity.

This is why we chose blood as inspiration; with its four different main types blood helped us in creating four different identities, four different behaviours for men and women.

Our aim is that before trying our scents people will ask themselves, ‘Who am I? Who do I want to be today?”

“Even though our scents all take inspiration from the history and peculiarity of each blood type if your blood type is O and you like AB scent better…we don’t mind.

Perfume may be a second skin but sometimes it’s also a dress, and in some occasions, a disguise!
Do you both have a background in Perfumery?

Antonio: I’m a copywriter and a photographer [he took all the product pictures]

Giovanni: I’m a former fashion designer who chose to enter niche perfumery in 2002. I’m the owner and co-creator of Acqua di Stresa, a niche concept based on rare flowers of the Italian Lake Maggiore.

Do the fragrances smell like blood?
Not at all! But each does have a lingering metallic end note; something that makes them recognizable and binds them together: a sort of trademark.

If we were shopping in the Liberty Fragrance Hall, how would you persuade us to try Blood Concept?

We would probably hide under the table. We are so very very shy…
If we were a little bolder we would probably invite you to discover your real identity, but we would never ask anybody to declare their own blood type – we are scent makers not clinic staff!

What fragrance are you wearing at the moment?

Giovanni: Antonio keeps on bathing in AB, he’s the younger so he wants to underline that he’s the contemporary man.

I’m wearing our next scent so I can judge people’s impressions.

Is there a famous nose you admire?
My father could recognize a hundred of spices and herbs with a sniff. I was so impressed by this when I was a kid!

Antonio is a genius so he will never admit to admiring anyone but himself.

What has been the highlight of your career?

The highlights of my career are my very first experiences, each project offers something new and exciting. I have been in the business for 17 years now and I started at age 25 creating Le Male by Jean Paul Gaultier, my very first fragrance and blockbuster. Since then I have been working with many world-renowned fashion designers, luxury houses and beauty brands. From Dior to Guerlain, Lanvin to Ferragamo; I’ve also worked with Narciso Rodriguez, Hedi Slimane, John Galliano and Elie Saab to name a few. My first olfactory installation was in 2006 for the Château de Versailles where I had been asked to perfume the basin of the Orangerie and to stage it. Two years ago I was knighted by the French Republic (Chevalier of Arts and Letters) and last, the opening of Maison Francis Kurkdjian in 2009.

Are scents seasonal like fashion collections or more eternal?

Perfume and fashion are intrinsically linked. However time in fashion has nothing to do with time in perfume. Fashion becomes old-fashioned the next season while perfumes are meant to build memories! I do however believe in having a perfume wardrobe. I build the fragrance collection of Maison Francis Kurkdjian in that modern spirit: timeless classic scents with a contemporary twist.

In 2005 you re-created the perfume of Marie Antoinette – what did that involve?

The story of Marie Antoinette‘s fragrance began when I met the specialist and historian of perfume Elisabeth de Feydeau in 2OO3. She was writing a biography about one of Marie Antoinette’s perfumers, Jean Louis Fargeon. At the time, I was already creating bespoke perfume on my own. Elisabeth and I took that opportunity to re-create a fragrance which could have been composed for Marie Antoinette. We knew that the Queen liked flowers, especially roses and irises and was not keen on the heavy musky amber fragrances generally used at the end of the 18th century.

Elisabeth shared Fargeon’s formula book with me. I realized that I could compose a fragrance in the same way, using only unique natural raw materials, as if I was working for Marie Antoinette at the end of the 18th century. It was an extraordinary experience. Of course the difficulty was to create a fragrance respectful of the rules of composition of the 18th century combined with the taste of nowadays! After few trials and many weeks of work, the fragrance was born.

Do you create fragrances with a particular person in mind?

When I create I have many people in mind, or I should say a kaleidoscope of people, as the perfect muse does not really exist. However, when I meet someone, I am able to tell what fragrances will suit him or her best after few minutes!

Do you have a favourite scent that you’ve created?

As a creator, I must say that my favourite scent is always the next one that I have in mind, the one that I have to create next. It’s about the excitement of creation (and the torture of the creation sometimes as well!). Right now I am launching my new collection of Perfume, Les Elixirs (out in October, available exclusively at Liberty). It’s always exciting to meet the final client and feel how she/he responds to a product it took months to think about and create.

Tell us more about Les Elixirs…

Behind the Elixir word is hidden the perfume extract of some fragrances from Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Muzzled in the 80′s, I decided to revive the beauty of perfume extract, this prince of perfumery. However I wanted to add a contemporary gesture and packaging, creating a new texture that likes the direct contact with skin. The perfume extracts of Maison Francis Kurkdjian fit in the palm of the hand and apply with a tiny roll-on perfume for anytime, anywhere, with discreet elegance. Three of my fragrances now have their Elixir version: APOM pour femme, Aqua Universalis and Lumière Noire pour femme.

What do you love about Liberty?

I love the spirit of the store, the fact you know you will find what you need, and what you do not need! I like the smoothness of the sales team and the respect to each customer. It’s not really a department store it’s more like being home or at a friend’s place. And it’s so British and such a flagship of London that it was the perfect place for Maison Francis Kurkdjian to have a corner. Paris and London are not that far apart, in distance or in spirit.

What would be your ultimate purchase from the store?

The ultimate? Buying the store probably!!!

Creator Asim Akhtar travelled the world in search of the best ingredients for the range, then analysed, developed and perfected each product. Asim took some time from his busy schedule to tell us about his top five products and what makes each one so special…

Exfoliating Facial Scrub

The process of exfoliating the skin is so important that I cannot put enough emphasis on making it into a bi-weekly habit. If you don’t exfoliate regularly your skin is guaranteed to look dull, tired, and rigid. Every skincare product we have developed here at Kyoku for Men relies on creating deep down, metabolic changes to the skin and without proper exfoliation, the new skin cells that have undergone drastic metabolic changes will not be allowed to reach the surface layer of skin. Exfoliation allows the skin to become born again by sloughing off dead skin cells, pulling excess oil and toxins from deep beneath the surface, and allowing the newer, healthier to skin cells to reveal themselves to the world.

Sake Infused Shave Creme (Normal and Sensitive)

Our Sake Infused Shave Creme is over 25 years in the making. With this product I wanted to create a creme that provided rich cushioning protection during a shave but also impeded the irritation that many men experience following shaving, without over-drying the skin. Combining Sake (increases oxygenation and decreases free radical production via increased capillary circulation), Silicone Micro-particles (coats the skin in an effort to significantly reduce drag) and our exclusive dual phase cellular anti-inflammatory complex (works to stop the activation of skin’s inflammatory pathways at both the surface and cellular level) we have been able to create a multi-ward winning product we are extremely proud of.

Razor Repair Balm

When I began the journey of creating the Kyoku for Men range, this was the first product I developed in order to cure the common occurrence of razor burn. I was tired of my skin feeling abused after shaving and my ultimate goal was to combat the irritation, redness, and dryness I felt after every shave.  Using rare Japanese herbs and combining this with our Kyoku Anti-bump Shield, we have been able to deliver an aftershave remedy that smoothes the skin texture and calms redness. In the long term, the balm leaves skin with the nutrients it needs to be ready for the next day’s shave.

Facial Moisturizer (SPF 15)

Cleansing and exfoliating are the first two integral steps in achieving a healthy metabolic condition for the skin; however true metabolic change occurs via the process of moisturizing. Our Facial Moisturizer (SPF 15) was formulated to carry its active ingredients through to your dermis, so that we can achieve long-term results while still sealing off the epidermis to prevent water loss. By combining bamboo, avocado oil, green tea leaf, aloe vera, plankton and vitamin E we have created a potent anti-aging formula which keeps skin looking young.  The UVA and UVB protection in our Facial Moisturizer (SPF 15) prevents against photo damage from the sun- a necessity for healthy skin.

Earth Body Scrub

Part of the Kyoku for Men bath and body range, the Earth Body Scrub is my favourite body cleansing product. The product has a deep smoky scent, which we developed from an infusion of Japanese Hinoki wood. It instantly transports you to a grounded and calm state. The scrub particles (Jojoba beads) gently remove dead and dull skin cells, leaving you with deeply cleansed and conditioned skin that’s ultra-smooth. The product also contains Indonesian Heartwood which has high levels of betulinic acid (an excellent anti-inflammatory), as well as tannins for astringency to protect skin against infection.

What are the best blusher colours for pale skin?

Alberto says: Go for cooler, paler tones of blush – bright pinks and soft corals look great on fair skin. Bobbi’s iconic Pale Pink Blush looks stunning on everyone – no wonder it’s her favourite!

I have big round eyes, are there any make up techniques that will help make them look smaller?

Alberto says: Many women use darker tones and strong definition not only to make their eyes look smaller but to create a signature look that is both classic and wearable. Try smokey hues with darker liner on the top and bottom lash line and extend the liner on the outer corner of your eye to create an almond shape.

I’m 47, Hazel eyes, pale skin. Problem is I’ve got very short and sparse eyelashes from repeated chemo treatments over the last 10 years. I used to have lovely Audrey Hepburn almond eyes; now they are miss piggy, what with ageing and all. What can I try to pretty them up please?

Alberto says: Bobbi has some great tips for women that have been in your situation in her Living Beauty Book, which you may like to read. You can gently apply eyeliner on the top lash line to create the illusion of lashes. To create the most natural look, blend the liner with a soft grey shade – try Bobbi’s Cement Eye Shadow.

Can you recommend a good foundation that will last all day for oily skin?

I love wearing heavy mascara and liner, but it always ends up under my eyes! any tips to stop it migrating?

I don’t like wearing heavy make up but still need coverage – is there a tinted moisturiser you could recommend for me?

The other formula is slightly richer for someone who prefers emollient textures. They are both packed with antioxidents for extra skin protection.

I always struggle doing my own make-up for a special occasion. Have you got any tips or suggestions?

I have dry skiin, can you tell me which foundation to use for a dewy, luminous look?

Alberto says: Bobbi has two great options for you – EXTRA SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizing Balm is great for a sheer, dewy look and doubles up as a moisturiser too (it’s one of my favourites!). Alternatively, Moisture Rich Foundation SPF 15 will give your skin the glow that you’re looking for, with a bit more coverage.

1. Quality Not Quantity

The last few years have seen our wardrobes bulge with wear-it-once clothes – those spur of the moment purchases that we’ve lived to regret. After weeks of eagerly waiting, the Margaret Dabbs Sole Spa has finally opened here at Liberty.  We must admit, our feet have been in need of a little treat ever since we donned our boots and pushed our sandals to the back of the wardrobe.

Needless to say, Team Liberty couldn’t wait to book ourselves in.  Offering an array of foot pampering treatments, it was hard to choose, but on Margaret’s expert recommendation we tried and tested the following:

Fish Therapy

‘The perfect way to rid the feet of flaky dead skin’

Having not had this treatment before, we tentatively dipped our toes into a tank of Garra Rufa fish.  Luckily these tiny fish have no teeth, so we didn’t lose any limbs. Instead, the fish nibbled away at our feet and after leaving them to work their magic for 15 minutes, our feet felt notably smoother.  The fish also provide a massaging motion so if you can get past the tickling sensation, it’s actually very relaxing!

Margaret Dabbs Medical Pedicure

‘Our defining medical pedicure, renowned for creating the perfect sole’

I’ve had a pedicure before, but never a medical one so wasn’t quite sure what to expect as I relaxed into my podiatrist Tamara’s chair.  With an array of slightly scary looking instruments on the table next to me (including a scalpel!) it was a little unnerving at first, but I was soon put at ease. After a look at my feet, Tamara was able to diagnose any problems and set to work on restoring my feet to their best.  After removing the hard skin, cleaning my nails, polishing and filing to perfection, a special blend of Emu oil was applied.  The oil is taken from underneath the feathers, so no Emus are sacrificed for the sake of our skin! Foot skin is 15 times thicker than the rest of your body, but this oil is able to penetrate and soften instantly.  I must confess to not having looked after my feet in recent months, but after just 45 minutes they were smooth, soft and looking amazing.  I’m no longer embarrassed of my feet and will be coming back every 6 weeks from now on to keep it that way!

Salt Therapy Powernap

‘The perfect place to help alleviate everyday stresses and strains’

With perfectly pampered feet we made our way to the Halo Therapy room to relax in one of their hanging chairs.  The room uses tiny negative ionized salt particles to unblock the respiratory system, resulting in easier, clearer breathing and is the perfect treatment for city dwellers and those with allergy conditions.  You can’t see or smell the salt but the relaxing environment makes for the perfect place to grab 40 winks away from the busy streets of London or clear up any respiratory problems in a holistic way.
