Day in the Life gives an insight into the lives of Team Liberty as they hunt down the very best products, create the very finest windows and displays, and give the wisest of expert styling advice…

This week Liberty’s Head of Fashion and Style Lee Whittle tells us about working at Liberty’s Style Service  - a personal shopping experience for our VIP clients. He talks us through a typical day, as well as Stella McCartney’s SS11 trunk show.

9am: We usually start the day with product training for the womenswear team. Brand specialists come into the store before opening hours to offer their take on the new collections. I follow this with a team brief – my daily meeting with the womenswear team.

10am: Floor walk.  This is the first chance to see new deliveries – I love this part of the day, it’s when you remember all the conversations you have had with people.  They may have expressed interest in a particular piece that has just arrived or I will see something that screams out a certain client’s name.  You know straight away they will be excited and you will see them wearing it soon!

11am: Following on from that I will review the day’s calendar with the Style Service team, look at who is booked in or expected, what they are coming in for, for instance a general wardrobe update or an event/special occasion outfit.  If they are a regular client we will discuss in advance what look and pieces would be suitable.  We know the personal style of our regulars and will often all have some input!

Afternoon: Whatever happens in the day from then onwards will usually always revolve around our clients; whether that’s personally meeting them or planning a regular client’s next visit.

What keeps things interesting is that clients and stylists often drop in and the team and I will then help them with whatever they need. That might entail acting as a one stop shop for a fashion legend or finding an amazing dress for an awards ceremony!

The Stella McCartney Trunk Show

At the start of November we held a Stella McCartney trunk show, and for two days the department was transformed and Stella reigned supreme.  This is something we had not done in quite a few months as during that time I didn’t feel that women wanted to shop in such a formal, forward thinking manner.  What was so great about our collaboration with Stella was that it was held just before the Spring collection started hitting the shop floor.  It offered our clients the chance to see the buying team’s selection in advance, and they didn’t have to wait long before they could start wearing some of the pieces!  The catwalk looks will of course only drop in the new year but they will be well worth the wait!

Lee’s Background

Before coming to Liberty I spent 9 years at Harrods and during this time managed Menswear, Womenswear and Fashion Accessories.  I then moved to the Harrods personal shopping department, it was while working there that the then CEO of Liberty called to ask if I would like to update the personal shopping department at Liberty.  The focus from this point onwards was on Style and of course offering clients a slick, discreet yet extremely accessible service.

What do you love about working for Liberty?

The Liberty team is a creative one; there are always the most amazing in store events and collaborations taking place.  As such no day is ever the same and it is this exciting and action packed environment that is my favourite thing about working for Liberty.

What are you most excited about at the moment?

At present Style Service is transforming into a winter wonderland.  The team and I are preparing to help clients to put together the most imaginative and thoughtful Christmas presents.  We have picked out the top 20 gifts from across the store and are aiming to make Christmas shopping a breeze. 

I’m also really excited about the imminent arrival of Isabel Marant’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection.  Her recent collections have proved so popular because there is something for everyone.  Isabel seems to really understand how women want to dress and as a result has become a bit of a fashion phenomenon over the past few seasons.  My favourite piece from SS11 is the knitted shearling gillet.  Summer fur…a new must have!

As well as this I am planning to put together some more hot collection previews.  The intimate and informal setting of our Stella McCartney event was a new and fresh approach yet still offered our clients a bespoke selection process.  Personalised events such as these are I feel, the way forward – it’s a slick and sexy way to shop.

Award winning jewellery designer Katie Rowland was spotted at Liberty’s Best of British Open Design Call, and her stunning knuckle duster rings have been the talk of the office since they hit the shop floor. We caught up with her over a soy latte to discuss femme fatales, cocktails in Saint Tropez and her wonderfully empowering statement jewels.

On Best of British:

“I have to admit that I didn’t really know anything about it until my flatmate mentioned it. It was a very last minute thing, and the longest day ever – I think I ended up seeing the panel at about nine thirty at night – I don’t even know how I managed to get through we were all so tired!”

On her collection for Liberty:

“It’s really nice when you can work with a retailer and develop a collection specifically for them. I’ve extended the St. Tropez collection – no one else has rose gold, and the stones are checkerboard faceted, and no one else has that. I really like a checkerboard facet because it adds real dimension and sparkle, and rose gold is really big for this season – it’s so flattering to all skin tones and so warming. The St. Tropez pieces are all about empowerment and glamour – think movie stars in the 1960s – cocktail graced days and sultry nights.”

On her inspiration:

“I’m obsessed with strong female characters, and the way that jewellery can make a woman feel empowered. I had pieces inspired by sirens from Greek mythology – monsters like Hydra. Another collection was inspired by Mademoiselle Libertine, a 17^th century courtesan who was very liberal for her time, and taught the ways of seduction to the French courts. The Spring Summer 2011 collection is called Lilith, after Adam’s first wife in Jewish folklore, who was thrown out of heaven and turned into a seductress of the night who preyed on men.”

On her background in graphic design:

“It’s really influenced how I’ve designed jewellery, right from shape to stones and colour. I’ve also used typography – to begin with I designed my knuckle dusters with tiny inkpads so you could leave your mark with them. As part of my final project at university I developed personalised rings could be engraved with your phone number – so you could go out with your little ink pad in your pocket and print your number down someone’s arm!”

This piece is part of the range Paradise Lost, it is one of Vicki Beamon’s favourites, made from hundreds of Swarvoski Crystals. Each piece takes a couple of days to form by hand. In the name of research we went and tried it on, and it almost floats around the neck, truly a whimsical piece of statement jewellery.

Vicki was on hand to answer some questions….

1/ How have you found partaking in Jewellery month at Liberty?

Erickson Beamon has existed for 25 years and we have always thought that doing trunk shows in the wonderful stores we sell to a very important part of our business.   Not only is it great to meet the customers, but having some time with the staff so that they get a further understanding of our gorgeous jewellery and what actually goes into the making of it crucial.

2/ What inspires your designs/influences you as a designer?

My partner Karen in New York and myself have a great creative relationship.  We design in both New York and London keeping the ideas flowing and fresh.  There are many influences, architecture, art, literature, film.  This really changes each season.  Each collection has a name.  For next Spring’s collection we have groups called Gypsy Sun which is a name taken from Jimi Hendrix and is a very Moroccan Coral and Turquise look.  We also have Eliza Dolittle and My Fair Lady which is a much more romantic story made from flowers.

3/ What are your favourite pieces from this collection?

I think the Crystal pieces are wonderful choices as they can make a dramatic change to any outfit.  I am particularly fond of the flower necklace which belongs to a group called Paradise Lost.  This piece is made from Swarovski Crystal and it takes a couple of days to form by hand.  The flower almost looks like it is floating in space!

 4/ What are your trends/styles/colours for SS09?

I mentioned a few above but we also have a group called Boudica which is made from colourful Agate Slices and marbles!  Jewellery is much chunkier for next season and it really is about big statement pieces.   Some of the other trends we are working on are African and Folk Inspired and also a cleaner look in Black and White spots.

5/ What can we expect to see from Erickson Beamon next?

There are lots of ideas and we are really hoping to go into a few other accessory catagories next.  We would love to have some evening bags for next year.

I have lots of pale blue and pink for summer, lots of black and silver and bright turquoise

4/ What can we expect to see from Monica Vinader next?

A great new concept to be launched next year with charms, and my really fab mens range, which women will also want to wear.
