She loved Dancing Ladies, a traditional floral with figures reminiscent of Indian Miniatures. This style was previously popular in the 1920s and 30s.

The second print Florence chose reflects her love of vintage clothing. Grace is a hand drawn lace print dating back to the 19th century. Both prints have been brought back specially for this season’s collection, we hope you like them!

This season Liberty Rocks! The Liberty Fabrics team has taken inspiration from great British music and rock’n'roll, from flower power anthems of the 1970s to 1950s rock and blues, 1990s acid house and the Brit-pop movement.

For collaborative prints they worked with the likes of Florence Welch and Graham Coxon as well as Storm Thorgerson, who was responsible for Pink Floyd’s iconic ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ cover.

Other prints have been influenced by song lyrics, with colour palettes drawn from vintage album covers. This season also marks the very first digital Liberty Prints, a collection of seven designs including one by award winning photographer Jill Furmanovsky.

The collection is available in Tana Lawn, Lantana Wool, Lilestone Wool, Crepe de Chine, Georgette, Poplin, Silk Satin and Jersey. Prices from £19.95 per metre. Full selection is available in store with Tana Lawn available online.

Read more about the collection

As an extra special treat we thought we’d share with you this behind-the-scenes look at award winning musician Edwyn Collins’s Ornithology print. In 2005 Edwyn suffered a severe cerebral haemorrhage. During his six month rehabilitation he drew a bird every day, each of which has been used by the Liberty Fabrics Team in this remarkable print. The design created pays homage to Collins’ dedication, like a sketchbook on fabric complete with names of birds and dates when they were drawn.

The image below shows Edwyn’s original illustrations on the left, and a swatch of the final Liberty Art Fabric on the right, available in four different colourways.

Last night we toasted the official launch of the Assouline Literary Lounge, a tranquil haven filled with the most beautifully presented tomes we’ve ever have the pleasure to gaze upon. The event was in honour of photographer Cecil Beaton, whose private scrapbooks and personal collections have been gathered together in a stunning hard back book, available now on our ground floor.

Back to the party, and Prosper Assouline himself had gloves at the ready to help guests, including our managing director Ed Burstell, leaf through some of the rarer titles on offer. We nibbled on delicious trays of canapés and sipped cocktails from the Bungalow 8 pop-up bar, which was assembled in the jewellery hall especially.

If you missed out on last nights joviality you may be tempted to try your hand at a little cocktail mixing of your own – here are last night’s tempting recipes…

The Cecil Club

Absolut Vodka, Aperol, gomme, fresh lemon juice, egg white & raspberries

Picasso’s Pom

Absolut Vodka, agave syrup, apple juice, fresh lime juice, pomegranate seeds & rosemary

So Goude Mojito

Rum, crushed ice, fresh lime juice, soda water, sugar & mint leaf

You can also watch a video of all last night’s highlights on our YouTube channel

This year the Arts & Crafts show also coincides with the V&A’s exhibition The Cult of Beauty, an exploration of Aestheticism – an artistic movement whose members both inspired and created Arts & Crafts designs.

To celebrate the opening of this exciting display, Esme Whittaker, assistant curator of The Cult of Beauty, spoke to guests about the Aesthetic style, and the Movement’s connection to Liberty’s illustrious past. We thought we’d share our highlights with you…

“Aestheticism [was] an extraordinary artistic movement which sought to escape the ugliness and materialism of the Victorian era by creating a new kind of art and beauty…Avant-garde designers such as William Morris, E W Godwin and Christopher Dresser also adopted a new approach, and with an increased sensitivity to line and colour, created artistic furnishings which transformed the middle class home into the ‘house beautiful’.

Liberty exemplifies the collaboration between commerce and Aestheticism, by providing a single shop where customers could purchase everything necessary to create the house beautiful and dress artistically. After several years experience trading in scarves and other goods, Arthur Lasenby Liberty opened the Liberty shop on Regent Street in 1875. At first he specialised in imports from China, Japan, India and North Africa, and sold the exotic furnishings that were particularly popular among Aesthetic artists. Japanese artefacts provided a fresh source of inspiration, and many artists bought collections of Japanese objects to decorate their homes and act as props or costumes for their paintings.

With the opening of Liberty, these novel and exotic objects became available to the wider public. The V&A was an early Liberty customer, purchasing a kimono in 1891. Increasingly, Liberty supplemented these products with ones commissioned from British designers, and their work, marketed anonymously, became part of the Liberty style. in 1884 Liberty opened a dress department with the guidance of the Aesthetic designer E.W Godwin. It encouraged women to dress artistically, and wear loose fitting medieval inspired costumes that made them look as if they had just stepped out of a Pre-Raphaelite painting.”

Weston’s striking scanned mineral prints were spotted at our Best of British Design Open Call last year, and his unique designs have gone on to become some of the most popular in the Liberty Scarf Hall…

Question: I love your scarf designs. What is your favourite part of the process?

Richard: My favourite part is discovering new designs in minerals as you have to scan a lot to find a good one! When I find one which looks like it will make a good design it’s very exciting.

Question: How many images do you currently have that are suitable for scarves? Are you still creating them?

Richard: I have around 3000 at the moment and yes I’m still creating but not as many as in the early stages as I’m a lot busier these days!

Question: Dear Professor. Where in the world would you like to travel to unearth unusual crystals?

Richard: Brazil is at the top of my list as they have the most minerals commercially available – it’s a big trade out there.

Question: Love your scarves, saw a Botswana agate the other day we have bets that we will see the design on one of your scarves.

Richard: I’ve got a few Botswana Agates so I’m sure you’ll see one pop up somewhere…

Question: When did you know you had “made it” in your career, what was that one moment that made you feel like you’d done it?

Richard: I’ve done lots of things in my career, but I really felt I was onto something very soon after I started scanning minerals and being accepted by Liberty was the confirmation I needed!

Question: I understand you are designing your own house and studio – will minerals or other natural materials play a part in the design?

Richard: LOTS! Minerals on fabric and in glass plus in over 30 metres of laser etched slate. See my Facebook page Weston for pictures.

Question: Love your nature inspired scarves. Do you think you might use other forms of nature for any future designs?

Richard: Yes I will! I’m combining mineral images with tree branching patterns at the moment and also looking at micro organisms particularly ones in the sea. Some of the designs should appear in Liberty in the coming months.

Question: Have you thought about branching out into clothing? For instance your prints would look fabulous on a silk shift dress.

Richard: Yes I have! I’m actively exploring this at the moment so watch this space…

Question: Any tips for the next Liberty Open Call? I’m signed up for the one in August and you seemed to have a really positive experience. Love the scarves by the way, it’s such a beautiful idea, I have collected crystals for a long time and it’s a really interesting twist to combine them with fashion.

Richard: My advice is BE PREPARED! You need ideas of costs and practical details and make sure you’re enthusiastic and believe in what you’re doing. Good luck!

Last night Liberty’s Home Buying Manager Michelle Alger was live on Facebook to answer all your questions about BBC2′s ‘Britain’s Next Big Thing’ series. The show follows hopeful suppliers who had the chance to pitch designs to the Liberty buying team at our Best of British Open Call.

Thanks to everyone who took part, here are our highlights of the Q&A:

Question: I have designed an amazing scarf collection…how do I get the opportunity to pitch to you!!?

Michelle: The best way is to send a concise price list with clear descriptions, images and your trading terms to us in the post.

Question: I would love to get my handmade candles into somewhere like Liberty, would you be looking at something exclusive to yourselves?

Michelle: You’d have to send us the details for that. We always love exclusives though!

Question: How did you get in to buying?

Michelle: I started off working on the shop floor and worked my way up to Head Office. It’s a great way to learn about the products first hand.

Question: What would you look for in a new Assistant Buyer for Home?

Michelle: ‎
Enthusiasm, reliability, organisation and real passion for home-ware and design led products.

Question: When being shown products from a designer do you prefer to be presented with a large or more concise collection? Also, how to you feel about being shown handmade prototypes as opposed to manufactured items?

Michelle: I definitely prefer a concise range! I don’t mind seeing either handmade or manufactured items. If I see items which aren’t quite right for us at the moment I am always open to further suggestions and being presented amended work.

Question: Are the shows like ‘BNBT’ the only way to present your work to Liberty?

Michelle: No definitely not – I attend at lot of graduate shows and trade fairs. Don’t be put off if you receive a rejection, you could have the right product but it might not be the right time.

Question: What is the best way to start a creative business?

Michelle: Theo [Paphitis] really hit the nail on the head on tonight’s show. You need a great business acumen! You really need a good business plan and know about your profit and loss. You also need to know the true cost of things like VAT and shipping, and most importantly truly understand who your customer is!

Perhaps best known for the ‘My Bed’ Turner Prize nomination, Emin is also famed for provocative patchworks. Using a traditional craft seldom explored in the fine art world, she embroiders intimate statements and personal memories.

We’ve been inspired to partake in some cathartic craft work ourselves, and we’ve been raiding the Liberty haberdashery for fabric offcuts and patchwork bundles.
World Land Trust and Liberty Scarves

International conservation charity the World Land Trust have collaborated with Liberty to create a collection of exclusive scarves. The five prints were created by Textile Design students at Winchester School of Art, and represent conservation projects around the world that are in urgent need of awareness and funds. 15% of all sales will be donated to the World Land Trust.

Winchester School of Art Competition

Over 40 final year students were asked to design five prints each for the project, with each scarf representing one of the World Land Trust project areas – Borneo, India, Paraguay, Atlantic Rainforest and the Keepers of the Wild programme. We took a behind-the-scenes peek at the finalist entries, which were displayed in the Heritage Suite at Liberty. These were narrowed down to a final five by an expert panel including Tammy Tinker – Fashion Assistant at Vogue, Liberty Accessories Buyer Alexandra Stylianidis, Shoe Designer Michael Lewis, Wildlife Artist Bruce Pearson and Jewellery Designer Dominic Jones. The winning students are Evelyn Males Echeverria for Paraguay, Freya Perrett for Rangers, Lollie Dunbar for Borneo and India, and Phoebe Farrell for Atlantic Rainforest in Argentina.

World Land Trust

With Sir David Attenborough as its patron, the World Land Trust has helped to save over 500,000 acres of threatened habitat since it was established in 1989. The Trust always work in collaboration with local partners and non-governmental organisations, and stand by their policy to never own any of the land they help to purchase outright.

Last weekend Londoners basked in glorious sunshine and record-breaking temperatures, but this week we’re feeling the curse of the in-between – those days that don’t quite make the cut weather-wise, and leave us more than a little confused in the wardrobe department.

It’s precisely for days such as these that everyone ought to have at least one ‘transitional’ jacket in their wardrobe; too lightweight for winter, and, contrariwise, not something one would take to the beach.

We’ve picked out four of our favourites for both women and men, to ensure you stay stylish in the most unpredictable of climates.

FOR HER (above)

1. Silk Bourette Jacket, Carven £545

3. Kayoko Liberty Print Blazer, Sessun £165

4. Beadnell Jacket With Liberty Print Lining, Barbour £199

Shop all women’s jackets

FOR HIM (below)
