24 April Sew a Coin Purse (Fully booked)

Sew a Coin Purse
Tutor: Josephine Perry

Learn to sew a lined coin purse and enjoy the satisfying challenge of using a glue-in purse frame. Find out how to draw your own pattern that can be adapted for use with a variety of frame sizes.

This class is suitable for those with recent basic sewing machine experience. All materials provided.

This is a workshop aimed at complete beginners or those who wish to brush up on their crochet skills. During the evening you will learn the basic stitches such as chains, double crochet and trebles with an opportunity to make a granny square or flower.

Participants will need to bring a 4mm crochet hook

This crochet evening uses a small project which will cover the following techniques; increasing and decreasing, working through a pattern, understanding your work ie counting stitches and rows as well as introducing decorative techniques.

12 April Easter Crochet

Using an original design by Jane Crowfoot, create a wonderful crocheted Easter egg using a bright selection of Rowan Yarn. A workshop for those crochetiers who have mastered the basics and would love to get to grips with colour and beads, to create a truly unique decoration or gift.

Participants will need to bring a 3mm crochet hook and scissors

19 April Learn to Sew... A Simple Appliqued Cushion (Fully booked)

Learn to Sew... A Simple Appliqued Cushion

The workshop aims to cover the basics of sewing and to give participants the confidence to go on to follow simple patterns. You will learn all the skills necessary to complete a cushion with a simple applique on the day.

Content will include:
• Cutting out paper patterns and fabrics; what do all the symbols mean?
• ow to read a pattern
• Using a sewing machine; getting started, threading it up, sewing in a straight line, sewing zig zag stitch, how to control fabric when sewing
• How to machine stitch appliqué patterns

26 April Patchwork Bag (Fully booked)

This workshop is a good introduction to sewing and patchwork using Rowan fabrics. You will be making a lined shoulder bag that has a patchwork front and plain back and in the workshop you will learn how to rotary cut fabric, how to work with a paper pattern, how to stitch straight seams on the sewing machine and last but not least how you construct a lined bag.

Sewing experience would be beneficial but is not a requirement.

3 May My Favourite Shirt (Fully booked)

My Favourite Shirt

Learn how to take a pattern from your favourite shirt, add seam allowances & include further manipulation if necessary. After only one class you will leave, not only with a fully drafted pattern from your favourite shirt, but you will also be equipped with the knowledge and basic principles of how to take a pattern from almost any garment that you wish.

Participants will need to bring a shirt, a pencil (plus two other coloured pencils or biros – red and black ideally), a rubber and tape measure

10 May Knitting in the Round (Fully booked)

Learn tips and techniques for knitting in the round including the magic loop method. A project based workshop to knit a small bag which incorporates I-cord cast off, following a chart, basic lace stitches and how to graft stitches.

Participants will need to bring 4mm double pointed needles, a 4mm circular needle at least 80cm long and a sewing up needle

This course is ideal for absolute beginners or returners to crochet. Starting from the very beginning in easy steps you will learn the main basic stitches and how to start from both a circle and a straight edge. By the end of the day you will have made two types of flower, along with some interchangeable bunting and gained confidence to go forward with your crochet.

The workshop aims to cover the basics of sewing and to give participants the confidence to go on to follow simple patterns. You will learn the skills needed to create your very own sewing kit to get you started, consisting of a pin cushion, needlecase, and a fabric container. Content will include: Laying/cutting out of pattern and fabrics, reading a pattern, using a sewing machine, threading up, sewing in a straight line, top stitching, slip stitching. If there is time, participants may customise and adorn their sewing kit.

This workshop aims to cover the basics of sewing and give participants the confidence to go on to follow simple patterns. You will learn all the skills necessary to complete a pair of pyjama bottoms on the day.

Content will include:
• Cutting out paper patterns and fabrics; what do all the symbols mean?
• How to read a pattern
• Using a sewing machine; getting started, threading it up, sewing in a straight line, how to control fabric when sewing
• Making an elastic waistband
• How to measure yourself and choose the right size sewing pattern for your size

7 June Lacy Crochet Cowl (Intermediate)

During this workshop you will make a delicate lacy cowl working in the round and learn how to follow patterns and crochet charts in more detail.

Participants will need to bring a 4mm crochet hook

14 June Lace Knitting

This full day workshop will show you the basics of lace knitting: How to read a lace chart, how to keep the pattern going when shaping lacework, the difference between all those yo, yfwd and yrn’s and the best way of blocking your finished piece. During the class we will also look at different ways of incorporating beads into knitted designs, including how to thread beads onto yarn before knitting. Participants will start a small beaded and lace project and either finish it or take it home to complete.

Participants will need to bring 3mm needles and a stitch holder

21 June Learn to Sew... An A-Line Skirt (Fully booked)

Learn to Sew... An A-Line Skirt

Make an A-line skirt to your own measurements in this introduction to dressmaking. You will learn about seaming, hemming, inserting a zip and techniques for getting a perfect fit.

Participants will need to come into store early in order to choose their skirt fabric

28 June Knitted Stripes (Fully booked)

Stripes are a key look for spring/summer 2014. This workshop is designed for knitters of all abilities who want to learn different ways of working with stripes. During the course of the day you will learn the best ways to change colour, how to work vertical and horizontal stripes and how to combine different techniques to give your stripes a different emphasis. This will include lace as well as dropped/crossed stitches and some colour work.
