19 MarchIntarsia Design & Knitted Purse

Intarsia Design & Knitted Purse

Tutor: Dee Hardwicke

Learn the Intarsia technique, along with shaping, finishing and two basic embroidery stitches. You will also be guided in designing original motifs from floral and leaf inspirations and templates, using these as the Intarsia decoration for a knitted purse. This workshop has an intermediate skill level and requires an existing knowledge of knitting.

Materials are provided, if you wish to use your own needles the size used on the day will be 3.25mm.

26 March Learn to Crochet

This beginner’s workshop teaches the basics of crochet including how to hold hook and yarn, basic stitches, how to change colour and how to work an edging. Participants are given ideas for future projects to help develop their new skills.

9 April Learn to Sew... Apron

This workshop is suitable for absolute beginners and rusty returnees and will give you the basic skills needed for simple dressmaking. You will learn how to cut fabric from a pattern, understand basic sewing terminology and use a sewing machine.

16 April Learn to Knit

Have you recently starting knitting? Or perhaps you are a complete beginner... this workshop will teach you the how to cast on and off, work some basic stitches and read a pattern. On the day you will be supplied with all the materials needed to make a small project as well as given lots of ideas for how to progress your knitting.

Materials are provided, if you wish to use your own needles the size used on the day is 10mm.

23 April Summertime Bucket Bag

Stitch a large, patchwork “go anywhere” bag that will hold all those essentials. The softly padded bag features patchwork triangles and is finished with metal feet; fabric handles will complete the bag however if students wish to add leather handles after the class they can. This bag comes from Janet’s book “Simply Modern Patchwork Bags”. To complete this workshop you must have knowledge of sewing and using a machine.

30 April Swarovski Beaded Collar

On this project-based workshop we will make a beaded collar using Summerlite 4ply and the sparkly new Rowan Swarovski crystals. As well as learning how to knit with beads, we will also cover short row shaping and creating a picot edge. To complete this workshop you must have a knowledge of knitting.

Materials are provided, if you wish to use your own needles the size used on the day is 3mm.

7 May Learn to... Knitting Techniques

Learn to... Knitting Techniques
Tutor: Bev Hodgkinson

This workshop will help you gain confidence in various knitting techniques including intarsia, lace work, fairisle and texture. It will be a project-based day in which you will produce a beautiful panel incorporating all of the above techniques – which can then be made into a cushion or a piece of textile artwork. You’ll also learn how to block your knitting successfully and how to read from a chart. Please bring along 3.25mm and 4mm needles. You must have a basic knowledge of knitting to complete this workshop.

Materials are provided, if you would like to use your own needles the size used on the day is 3.25mm and 4mm.

14 May Quilt in a Day... 2 Blocks, 1 Quilt

Enjoy a day learning the basics of patchwork. In this class you will learn how to make two block designs to create a throw sized quilt top during the day. The blocks are simple, yet very effective and you will learn some patchwork tricks along the way! This class requires a knowledge of sewing.

This workshop aims to cover the basics of sewing, giving participants the confidence to go on to follow simple patterns. To get you started, you will learn the skills needed to create your very own sewing kit, consisting of a pin cushion, needlecase, and a fabric container.

Content will include: Laying/cutting out of pattern and fabrics, reading a pattern, using a sewing machine, threading up, sewing in a straight line, top stitching, slip stitching. If there is time, participants may customise and adorn their sewing kit. This workshop is aimed for the absolute beginner sewer.

28 May Foundation Piecing Patchwork

Spend the day with internationally renowned quilt designer, TV presenter and author, Stuart Hillard, learning to make patchwork using the Foundation Piecing Method: no complicated maths, fussy templates or advanced skills are required. If you can sew a straight line you can foundation piece and make beautifully accurate and complex-looking quilts using this brilliant method. During the day, make one or two Union Jack blocks which can be turned into cushions, pillows or a tote bag... or you might just be inspired to start your own Union Jack quilt! Basic sewing skills are an advantage but this class will also teach new skills to more advanced sewers and expand your sewing repertoire. This workshop requires knowledge of using a sewing machine.

4 June Learn to Sew... Skirt

Learn to Sew... Skirt

Tutor: Melanie Boocock

In this workshop you will combine beautiful fabrics to make a skirt – you will sew seams, gathers, hems and casings. Melanie will give you lots of tips and ideas for how to develop and embellish the basic design so that you can go on to make beautiful, individual skirts in the future.
